Retirement Planning

Retirement planning starts with a number: the monthly income you will want, adjusted for inflation, and the years you have to build it.

How mutual funds fit in

Mutual funds can be used to build a retirement corpus through regular SIPs while you earn, and to draw an income later through systematic withdrawals. The mix between growth-oriented and stable schemes usually shifts towards stability as retirement gets closer.

What to work out first

  • Years left until you plan to stop working
  • Your expected monthly expenses today and how inflation may raise them
  • Savings you already have, such as EPF, PPF or fixed deposits
  • How much market volatility you can accept, now and later

Review every year

Income, expenses and markets change. A yearly review keeps the plan honest.
