RBI pauses rate rises at 6.50%

By Dhara Hariya ยท

What happened. On 6 April 2023 the Monetary Policy Committee unexpectedly kept the repo rate unchanged at 6.50% after six consecutive increases, while saying it remained ready to act if needed.

Why it matters for investors. The pause was described as a decision to assess the impact of earlier increases and was not a signal that tightening had ended; the stance stayed focused on withdrawal of accommodation.
